Alexia’s Work

Girls Who Own | Foodstuffs North Island Limited

Problem

Women were significantly underrepresented in supermarket ownership and senior retail leadership across Foodstuffs’ co-operative network.

Supermarket ownership is one of New Zealand’s largest entrepreneurial pathways, yet many young women didn’t see it as an option, or didn’t have exposure, mentors, or a clear entry point.

Foodstuffs needed to:

• diversify its future leadership pipeline

• engage young women earlier

• make ownership visible and attainable

• build long-term succession within the co-op

Solution

Designed and delivered Girls Who Own, an immersive leadership accelerator for young women aged 16 to 20.

A hands-on, real-world programme. Not a classroom.

Participants:

• worked alongside owner-operators

• learned how supermarkets actually run

• built entrepreneurial and leadership skills

• received one-to-one mentoring

• saw ownership as a tangible career path

Alexia partnered end-to-end, from programme design and stakeholder alignment through to facilitation on-site.

Industry recognition

As highlighted by Cooperative Business New Zealand in the NZ Cooperative Economy Report 2025:

“Foodstuffs offers specific employer-educator programmes such as internships and apprenticeships, alongside retail programmes such as the Future Foodies Gateway Programme and the Girls Who Own leadership development programme.”

“The programme has acted as a welcome sign to the industry for young women, and that the staff were energised and inspired by the student’s fresh approaches — with five young women even being offered a paid summer internship as a result.”
